UND Summer Movie Camp

Students in the teen session of the 2008 UND Summer Movie Camps edit their movies in the computer lab of the Visual Arts Department.

The UND Summer Movie Camp is a workshop for teenagers and adults that has been held on the campus of the University of North Dakota since 2006.

[edit] About the Workshop

The two-week moviemaking workshop is taught through the UND English Department by Kathy King and Christopher P. Jacobs. Each student writes a screenplay the first week. The second week as many of the scripts as possible go into production, directed by the screenwriter with classmates as cast and crew members. Students can use Digital 8 or MiniDV cameras from the UND Department of English, but some use their own cameras. Each student then edits his or her own version of one of the movies, and instructor Christopher Jacobs also edits versions of some of the titles. Computer editing facilities have been provided by the UND Department of Visual Arts, which has a Mac lab with Final Cut Pro installed.

Starting with a grant its first year, the workshop was supported entirely from its tuition fees for its second year. In 2008 it received another grant, which underwrote the cost of purchasing additonal production equipment, class materials, and advertising.

The 2006 workshop was a grant-funded project held the afternoons of June 12-16 and 19-23. Thirteen students from age 12 to 18 participated in the first year's workshop, shooting six different movies and editing several versions. The final night of the workshop, all the student-edited movies were screened for the public at the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall, and workshop organizer Kathy King presented awards in various categories.

The 2007 workshop was self-supporting (from the tuition fees and inter-departmental cooperation), and ran the afternoons of June 4-8 and 11-15. For the second annual workshop, students had the option of enrolling in either or both weeks. As a theme this year, all scripts had to involve some item found at a rummage sale. Ten students from age 11 through 18 were in the screenwriting session, with two additional students in the production session. They produced nine different movies, showcased in a public presentation at the Empire Arts Center on the afternoon of June 24.

The 2008 workshop received another grant, used to purchase additional production equipment (a boom mike with windscreen and portable digital audio recorder) and to pay for advertising and class materials. Besides the mid-June afternoon teen workshop, an extra two-week evening course for adults was scheduled in May at the request of several people who had seen the results of the two years of teen workshops.

The 2008 moviemaking workshop for adults ran from May 12-14 for the screenwriting segment and May 19-23 for the production portion. Eight students ranging from their 30s through 60s participated, with six taking both weeks, plus one extra person each week who took just one session. Three of the scripts written the first week were produced during the second week.

The 2008 teen session ran from June 9-13 for the screenwriting week and June 16-20 for the production week. Four 2008 students had already been in one or both of the previous summer movie camps.

The movies from both 2008 sessions were screened for the public at the Empire Arts Center at 2 pm Sunday, June 29, 2008.

In 2009, a grant again helped fund the workshops. The adult workshop was held the evenings of June 1-5 for the screenwriting week and June 8-12 for the production week. The teen session this year was one week only, with all-day sessions from July 20-24. The movies made at both 2009 workshops were screened for the public at the Empire Arts Center at 7 pm Friday, July 31, 2009.
