In 1985, Will Hughes, a small-town Minnesota teenager, is on the fast track to reaching his dream of playing college hockey. His brother James, two years older than Will, is a construction worker after quitting the high school team his senior season.
James must face his past as his brother leads the local high school team into the postseason, with nowhere to hide in the northern Minnesota community.
