Scott Edward Haugen
From Fargo Filmmaking
Scott Edward Haugen (b. January 4, 1981) (sometimes billed as Scott Haugen) was born in Plant City, Florida on January 4, 1981 to a truck driver father and phone company worker mother. His family, originally from the Midwest, soon returned to Minnesota just five months after Haugen's birth. He was raised in Crookston, Minnesota and lived there for ten years. Haugen first acted in the third grade, appearing in three plays (two of which featured him in leading roles). His family lived there until early summer 1991, at which time his mother received a transfer from the the U.S. Post Office in Crookston to the U.S. Post Office in International Falls, Minnesota, across the Rainy River from Canada.
After living there until late spring of 1994, his family then returned to the Red River Valley of the North and moved to Dilworth, Minnesota. After a brief time away from acting, Haugen returned to the theatre and performed in a junior high production of Oh, What a Tangled Web. Upon entering senior high school, Haugen appeared in his very first production of a Shakespeare play as Fortinbras in Hamlet. He would subsequently appear as Leonato in Shakepeare's Much Ado About Nothing, and then starred as the titular Scottish thane in Macbeth. After being absent from the theatre for almost half a decade, Haugen returned to the Bard's work in the summer of 2005 as Prince Escalus in a Shakespeare in the park production of Romeo and Juliet with the Fargo-based independent theatre company Undiscovered Country Productions.
Later that winter, Haugen co-starred as Richard the Lionhearted in Undiscovered Country Productions' interpretation of James Goldman's The Lion in Winter (which Haugen cites as his personal favorite role and production of all the theatre he has done). In the summer of 2006, Scott returned to the park with his fellow players to appear as Borachio in his second production of Much Ado About Nothing. Most recently, Haugen portrayed Giles Ralston in the company's 2007 winter production of Agatha Christie's legendary murder mystery The Moustrap, and as Orlando in As You Like It, UCP's 2007 summer Shakespeare in the park production, which was performed at Island Park in Fargo.
Beginning in the early fall of 2005, Haugen made his first foray into film and joined the production of the sci-fi-time-travel-ensemble-comedy Mercedes Ray, created by his friend and fellow actor Tucker Lucas. Lucas was the auteur behind the camera, while Haugen portrayed a young, pre-presidential Thomas Jefferson. Haugen also co-produced this independent film. Mercedes Ray had its first screening at the Main Avenue Theatre in Fargo on February 2, 2007 for the production's cast and crew. The film opened to the public on May 26, 2007 at the historic Fargo Theatre.
In the fall of 2006 Haugen co-directed, co-wrote and co-starred in the faux documentary short Student Senate: A Documentary with his girlfriend and fellow filmmaker Stephanie Morse.
In the fall of 2007 Haugen co-starred in Honor Guard, a two-person character study about a pair of young U.S. soldiers who have served in Iraq together but are now in the United States. One of them, Dean (played by Haugen), is returning to the Middle East voluntarily to serve a second tour of duty. The short film was written, produced and directed by Stephanie Morse.
Haugen is currently working on pre-production of Preacher Marsh's Tapes as director, producer, co-writer and co-star. The postmodern music video/documentary is based on the moody album of the same name, and its artist, Haugen's friend, Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Ken Parker. The film is currently in pre-production and is tentatively slated to begin shooting in the winter of 2009.
Haugen is presently, and largely, engaged and enamored in politics and activism, and is a member and officer of the Democratic-NPL Party of North Dakota. As a result of his commitment to these pursuits, most of Haugen's creative and artistic endeavors have been put on the back burner. He has worked on twelve political campaigns (as well as numerous, additional non-partisan ones) in the last four years, with 2008 finding him working on races for Al Franken for U.S. Senate, Tim Mathern for ND Governor, Mitch Vance for ND State Treasurer and Hillary Rodham Clinton for President. Haugen held varying roles in these races, from Adviser to Deputy Campaign Manager. Haugen was elected on January 18, 2009 as the Treasurer of the North Dakota State District 21 Democratic-NPL Party.
