Orphaned as a child, Mercedes Ray has never been one for dolls or dress up. Growing up on a whaling ship, she became familiar with combustion engines and other pieces of equipment before moving out into the real world. After experimenting with matter displacement technology for a decade she accidentally stumbled upon time travel, and seeing an opportunity, began pilfering objects from past time periods to sell to antiques dealers in the present.

Although it has never been verified, it's believed she lost her eye on her first voyage into the past when she encountered a pirate ship.
