Intro to Film

From Fargo Filmmaking

Intro to Film is a regularly offered English Department class at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. It is a broad-reaching film appreciation class that touches briefly on many aspects that affect a viewer's perception of any movie. Topics covered include the science and technology behind movies, film as a business and industry, film history, story and plot structure, basic cinematic techniques, film genre, film theory, international cinema, film style, and film analysis. It meets twice a week, once to view a film and once for lecture-discussion.

Students who have access to their own production equipment have the option of making a movie for their semester project instead of doing two short analytical term papers or one long research paper.

Christopher P. Jacobs is the current instructor for three sections using Richard Barsam's Looking at Movies as a text. Crystal Alberts sometimes teaches an additional section using different films and the latest edition of Bordwell and Thompson's Film Art as the textbook. Previous film professors have included Michael A. Anderegg and Donald W. McCaffrey, both now retired.

There are typically between 70 and 110 students in four combined sections, about 20 to 30 per section. In Fall 2007 there were only three sections offered. Since Spring of 2002, one to five student movies have been completed for each term except Spring of 2004 and Spring of 2008. This class serves as a good preparation before taking Creative Movie Production or Advanced Movie Production.
