According to Derek Breuer in an interview with Greg Carlson for the High Plains Reader, Dick's Beer is about a group of guys who want to go to the Virgin Islands, but lack funding for the trip. In order to raise money, they decide to create and market a beverage called Dick's Beer. Some DEA officers, however, think the guys are running a meth lab.

The movie was shot in Fargo, Moorhead, Harwood, Georgetown, and Ada. In one scene, the impression is given that a van has crashed through a house. The moviemakers convinced someone to donate a van, cut it in half, and help create the illusion that part of the vehicle was in the house and part of it was outside the house.

Dick's Beer was shown to the public on November 1, 2003 at 9 pm at the Fargo Theatre. Tickets were $4 at the door.
